What is the difference between CPM and RPM?

CPM is what an advertiser pays per thousand ad impressions. RPM is what lands in your account per thousand video views, after YouTube keeps its 45% share and after accounting for views that saw no ad at all. This calculator uses RPM, which is why its numbers look lower than calculators quoting CPM. Those are overstating earnings by roughly double.

Why does audience location matter so much?

Advertisers bid far more to reach viewers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia than in most other markets, and the gap is large enough to swamp niche. The same video can earn four times more from a US-heavy audience than a globally mixed one, which is why region is a separate input here.

Do Shorts actually make money?

A little, and only at scale. A million Shorts views is worth roughly $40 to $150, where a million long-form views in the same niche might be worth $3,000. Shorts earn their place by feeding subscribers to long-form content, not by paying directly.

Why is the estimate a range rather than one number?

Because RPM genuinely swings that much. Q4 advertising rates can be double January's, ad load varies by video length, and a single video going viral with a mismatched audience can drag a month's average down. A single figure would be false precision.

What else do channels earn beyond ads?

Sponsorships, affiliate links, memberships, merchandise and their own products. Above roughly 50,000 monthly views these usually exceed AdSense, often by a wide margin. This calculator covers ad revenue alone, so read the result as a floor.

Why most YouTube calculators are wrong

Nearly all of them quote CPM and present it as your income. CPM is the advertiser's price, and YouTube keeps 45% of it before anything reaches you. Worse, a large share of views never serve an ad at all, because the viewer has Premium, an ad blocker, or the video was flagged as limited for advertisers.

The second error is treating niche as the only variable. Audience geography moves RPM harder than topic does: a gaming channel with a US audience frequently out-earns an education channel with a globally mixed one, despite the niche rates suggesting the opposite.

Finally, most calculators quietly assume long-form monetisation and then let people plug in Shorts view counts, producing estimates that are wrong by a factor of fifty. Shorts and long-form are separate businesses that happen to share a platform.
