What size should an Instagram post be?

1080 by 1080 pixels for a square post and 1080 by 1350 for a portrait 4:5 post, which takes up the most room in the feed. Stories and Reels are 1080 by 1920. Instagram shrinks anything wider than 1080 pixels and crops anything taller than 4:5 in the feed, so resizing first keeps control of what is cut.

Can I resize without cropping my photo?

Yes. Pick Fit with padding: the whole picture is kept and the spare space is filled with a colour you choose. Crop to fill trims the edges instead, and Stretch forces the exact size and distorts the picture. With exact pixels and the ratio locked, nothing is cropped at all.

What size is a YouTube thumbnail and banner?

A thumbnail is 1280 by 720 pixels (16:9) and must be under 2 MB. A channel banner is 2560 by 1440, with the part shown on every device being the centre 1546 by 423. Both sizes are in the Social sizes list.

How do I make the file size smaller too?

Resizing to fewer pixels already makes the file much smaller. To get under a set size such as 100 KB or 2 MB, run the resized image through the image compressor next and lower the quality until it fits.

Is the image resizer free and private?

Yes. There is no login and no daily limit, and the image never leaves your device: it is decoded, drawn and saved by your own browser. Images up to 40 MB work, and outputs up to 8000 pixels on a side.

Image Resizer

Resize any image to an Instagram post, Story, YouTube thumbnail or banner, or to exact pixels or a percentage. Crop, pad or stretch to fit. It all runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

Drop an image to resize

JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF, up to 40 MB. Nothing is uploaded.

Resize first, so the app does not crop for you

Every app forces its own shape. Upload a landscape photo as an Instagram portrait post and Instagram decides what to cut. Upload a square image as a YouTube thumbnail and it gets black bars. Resizing to the exact size first means you choose the crop, not the app.

Pick crop to fill when the subject sits in the middle of the picture, and fit with padding when nothing can be lost, like a screenshot or a quote card. Stretch is there for the rare case where an exact size matters more than the picture looking right.

Uploading to a form with a file size limit? Resize here, then shrink the file with the image compressor. Grabbing a thumbnail to study? The YouTube thumbnail downloader saves it in full size.
