Is the video uploaded to a server?

No. Decoding and encoding happen inside your browser using the WebCodecs API, the same hardware encoder your operating system uses. The file is read from disk, processed in memory, and offered back as a download. That is also why there is no queue, no file limit tied to a plan, and no watermark.

Will compressing lose quality?

Some, always: compression means throwing away bits. What matters is where. This tool keeps the resolution and frame rate and only lowers the bitrate, which is the least visible place to save. For a one minute clip going to 10 MB the result looks fine on a phone; for a ten minute clip going to 10 MB the bitrate gets starved and the tool warns you before you press the button.

Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Safari 17 or newer on a desktop, and Chrome on Android. Firefox has not finished shipping video encoding in WebCodecs, so it shows a notice instead of a broken result. The image compressor on this site works everywhere because it only needs a canvas.

What is the difference between target size and quality mode?

Target size is for limits: you know the file has to be under 25 MB for an email and you do not care about the exact bitrate. Quality mode is for when there is no hard limit and you just want a smaller file: Small is roughly a quarter of the original, Balanced is hard to tell apart on a phone, Sharp keeps fine detail and saves less.

Why did my file get bigger?

The source was already encoded more efficiently than the target you picked, usually a screen recording or a phone clip that was already tiny. H.264 at a higher bitrate than the source cannot invent detail, it just spends bits. Pick a smaller target or use Small in quality mode.

How big a file can it handle?

Up to 500 MB per file. Above about 150 MB it will take a few minutes and use a lot of memory, so keep the tab in the foreground. The limit is the browser's memory, not a plan: both the input and the output live in RAM while it runs.

Why a size target beats a quality slider

Nobody compresses a video for fun. There is a limit somewhere: 10 MB on Discord, 16 MB before WhatsApp turns your clip into a document, 25 MB on an email, 100 MB on a CMS. A quality slider makes you guess, export, check the size, and try again. A size target does the arithmetic once: file size is bitrate times duration, so given the duration and the audio track, the video bitrate that lands under the limit is a single division. That is what the presets do, with a three percent margin for the container.

The other thing most online compressors do is upload your file to their server, queue it behind everyone else's, compress it with a fixed preset, and stamp a watermark on the result unless you pay. This one does none of that because it does not have a server in the loop. The WebCodecs API gives the page access to the same hardware encoder your operating system uses, so a one minute clip compresses in a few seconds on a laptop and the bytes never cross the network. For anything you have not published yet, that is the difference between a tool you can use at work and one you cannot.

Two honest limits. Compression cannot make a long video small and sharp at the same time; a ten minute clip forced under 10 MB is about 130 kbps, and at that point every codec produces mush. The tool warns you before you press the button rather than after. And the audio is copied untouched rather than re-encoded, which is what you want (speech at 128 kbps is already small) but means a clip that is mostly audio cannot shrink much further.
