Create a release-day Canvas

Use the maker to test an image, GIF, video or AI idea, then open the full editor when the loop direction and crop feel right.

For cover art

Turn a single release image into motion with a subtle push, pull or drift that returns cleanly.

For music-video clips

Trim one readable movement into a vertical 8-second loop without needing a full editing timeline.

For AI visuals

Generate vertical artwork with subtle motion or create a new eight-second AI video loop from one prompt.

For Spotify upload

Check length, ratio, crop and audio before you move the MP4 into Spotify for Artists.

Spotify Canvas specs without guesswork

Spotify describes Canvas as a short vertical loop. Build for the current upload rules instead of old 10-second templates or oversized exports.

How to make a Spotify Canvas

Use the same workflow whether you start from cover art, a music-video clip, a phone video, a GIF, or AI artwork.

Start with the asset you already have, make it readable as a vertical loop, then export only when the repeat feels intentional.

1. Start with the right source

Use a complete visual beat: a face turning, smoke moving, light passing, a rotating object, or a cover image with enough extra space to crop vertically.

2. Crop before you animate

A square cover or horizontal music-video clip loses a lot of frame in 9:16. Decide what the Canvas is about, then keep that subject near the center third.

3. Make the repeat intentional

The best Canvas videos do not just stop after eight seconds. They return to the opening frame, hide the cut, or reverse naturally before the loop restarts.

4. Remove text and audio

Spotify already shows the song title and artist name. Canvas is silent, so embedded audio and lyric-style typography usually create noise instead of clarity.

5. Check the phone crop

Phone edges and controls can cover details. Preview the opening frame, closest crop and last frame at mobile size before exporting.

6. Upload through Spotify for Artists

Faceless creates the file. Spotify publishing still happens in Spotify for Artists, where an Admin or Editor on the artist team can add or replace the Canvas.

Pick the right loop style

Spotify names continuous, hard cut and rebound loops. A still image usually needs a related push-and-return move.

Continuous loop

Best for water, smoke, light, rotating objects and abstract motion with no obvious beginning.

Hard cut

Best when the edit is part of the rhythm: a blink, camera flash, impact, gesture or repeated pose.

Rebound

Best when reversing the clip looks natural. Fabric, liquid, subtle body movement and camera pushes often work.

Push and return

Best for a still image. The camera moves in, then returns to the opening crop before the repeat.

Photo, video or AI Canvas

The source changes the creative decision. The export rules stay the same: 9:16, short, silent and easy to read on a phone.

Make a Canvas from a photo

Use a slow push, pull or drift that returns to the first crop. It works especially well for cover art, portraits, still-life artwork and release photos.

Make a Canvas from video

Trim to one clean movement. Avoid singing and rapping footage because Canvas does not sync to the track and short clips can look mistimed.

Make an AI Spotify Canvas

Choose AI image for subtle animated artwork or AI video for a generated eight-second loop. Prompt one subject, material, lighting style and mood, with no text.

Fix common Canvas upload issues

A technically close file can still fail or look wrong in Spotify if the duration, ratio, crop or loop join is off.

The Canvas is too long

Trim it to 3-8 seconds. Eight seconds is the current maximum.

The frame is not vertical

Export 9:16 portrait video instead of square, horizontal or letterboxed video.

The subject is covered

Move faces, logos and important motion upward and away from the bottom controls.

The loop jumps

Use a rebound, match the first and last frame, or hide the cut behind a flash or motion blur.

The file includes sound

Mute the source before export. Spotify Canvas is a visual layer behind the song.

Make the loop serve the song

A Spotify Canvas is not a tiny music video. It is not synchronized to the track, and Spotify already draws the song title and artist name over the screen. The strongest loops use one readable visual idea and leave typography out.

Keep faces, products and important motion near the middle. Different phone screens can crop the edges, while player controls cover part of the lower frame. Fast cuts and flashing frames are harder to read and can be uncomfortable to watch.

Canvas ideas that fit releases

Use these as lightweight templates when you need a Canvas concept quickly.

Single cover motion

Animate the release artwork with a slow camera move and matching grain, light or texture.

One performance detail

Use hands on an instrument, a silhouette, stage lights, a crowd reaction or a close shot that does not rely on lip sync.

Abstract mood loop

Match the song with smoke, liquid, chrome, film burn, flowers, weather, architecture or a moving symbol from the lyrics.
