You can nail framing, pacing, and captions… and still ruin a video at the very end with bad export settings. The export step feels boring, so a lot of people just tap "default" and hope for the best. But remember: every platform will recompress your upload, so if you start with something already heavily compressed, the final result can look crunchy and blurry. The goal is to export once, at a high enough quality that TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have clean material to work with.
Let’s break this down practically. For all three platforms, stick with MP4 (H.264 codec) or HEVC/H.265 if your editor supports it and your phone handles it well. Use 1080x1920 resolution, 9:16 aspect ratio, and a frame rate that matches your source footage—usually 30fps or 60fps. Don’t export 24fps and then upload to platforms expecting 30+fps; motion can look a bit off. If you shot in 60fps and want that smooth, crisp look (or occasional slow motion), export at 60fps. If you want a more classic feel, shoot and export at 30fps consistently.
Bitrate is where quality and file size play tug-of-war. On mobile editors, you’ll usually see a "quality" slider, or sometimes a specific bitrate option. If you can set it manually, aim for at least 8–12 Mbps for 1080p vertical; if your app just says "high quality", choose that, especially for content with lots of motion or text overlays. Try to avoid overkill like 40+ Mbps unless you know what you’re doing; it’ll create giant files without visible benefit after platform compression.

Export once at your best settings, then upload that same master file separately to each platform, instead of downloading from one platform and re-uploading to another. Each time you re-upload a compressed/downloaded version, you lose more quality.
