## What changed in this update

- ElevenLabs' Starter plan is now $6 a month billed monthly ($5 a month billed yearly); we previously listed $5. Its pricing page now lists 74 languages, up from the 29 we cited.
- Correction: OpenAI text-to-speech is not free. The API bills per use ($15 per 1M characters on tts-1, $30 on tts-1-hd); we previously listed it as free with an OpenAI account.
- OpenAI now offers 13 built-in voices (we previously said six) and custom voices built from an approved speaker consent recording (we previously said no voice cloning at all).
- Murf's pricing page now lists 200+ voices and 30+ languages and accents; we previously cited 120+ voices and 20+ languages. Creator is still $19 a month billed yearly.
- PlayHT's website (play.ht) no longer resolves. Public reports say the service shut down on December 31, 2025 after Meta hired the PlayAI team, so we removed it from the ranking.
- Best free option is now ElevenLabs: it has an ongoing free plan, and OpenAI text-to-speech (our previous pick) is pay-per-use.

## How we compared these tools

This is an editorial comparison, not a listening trial. We compared each voice tool against the five weighted criteria below using the vendor's own pricing, plan, feature and documentation pages, checked on the date shown at the top of this page (each tool card links what we checked). Faceless.so publishes this page. Faceless is not ranked here, but it uses ElevenLabs and OpenAI voices in its own product, so we are a customer of both. Every rating is our editorial judgment, not a measured score: we did not run listening panels, scored samples or cloning trials.

## The 4 ai voice generators we recommend

#1

![ElevenLabs](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=elevenlabs.io&sz=64)

### ElevenLabs

Top pick

Best for: Faceless creators who care about voice quality first and want voice cloning

9.5

Our rating / 10

Starts at $6/month (Starter; $5/month billed yearly; free plan with 10,000 credits a month)Pricing checked September 25, 2026 on [ElevenLabs's own page](https://elevenlabs.io/pricing)

ElevenLabs is our #1 pick: it pairs 74 languages with voice cloning, a public API and an ongoing free plan. Faceless uses ElevenLabs voices in its own product, which is worth knowing when you read this ranking. The free plan exists but is too tight for daily use.

Pros

- Ongoing free plan with 10,000 credits a month
- Voice cloning included on paid plans from Starter up
- 74 languages listed on every plan, including the free one
- Public API with official Python and JavaScript SDKs

Cons

- Free plan caps at 10,000 credits per month, which runs out fast
- Usage is metered in credits on every plan, so the bill grows with how much audio you generate

#2

![OpenAI Voice](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=platform.openai.com&sz=64)

### OpenAI Voice

Best for: Cost-conscious creators who don't need voice variety or cloning

8.4

Our rating / 10

Starts at $15/1M characters (Pay as you go via the API (tts-1); tts-1-hd is $30 per 1M characters; no free allowance listed)Pricing checked September 25, 2026 on [OpenAI Voice's own page](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/text-to-speech)

OpenAI text-to-speech is the pay-as-you-go option: no subscription, billed per character through the API. The small built-in voice set and gated custom voices are what stop it from a higher rank. If your channel uses one consistent voice and you'd rather pay per use than subscribe, this is the tool to pick.

Pros

- No subscription: pay-as-you-go API pricing, $15 per 1M characters on tts-1
- Part of the OpenAI API, so one key covers speech alongside text and transcription
- Supports streaming audio output for real-time use

Cons

- 13 built-in voices, which still limits brand differentiation next to ElevenLabs' library
- Custom voices are gated: they need a recorded speaker consent statement and an eligibility check
- Language coverage is narrower than ElevenLabs's

#3

![Murf.ai](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=murf.ai&sz=64)

### Murf.ai

Best for: Audiobook narrators and educators who need fine-grained voice tuning per word

7.8

Our rating / 10

Starts at $19/month (Creator, billed yearly; free plan with 10 minutes of voice generation and no downloads)Pricing checked September 25, 2026 on [Murf.ai's own page](https://murf.ai/pricing?product=studio)

Murf's strength is the editor. If you need to tweak voice delivery word by word (emphasis, pause, pacing), it gives you the most control on this list. If you mainly want good default voices, cloning and an API, ElevenLabs covers more for less.

Pros

- 200+ voices across 30+ languages and accents
- Per-word emphasis editor lets you tune delivery word by word
- Studio editor built for voiceover projects, with pitch, speed and pause controls

Cons

- The pricing page we checked showed only the billed-yearly rate; $19 is the Creator plan billed yearly
- Free plan is limited to 10 minutes of voice generation with no downloads
- Voice cloning is locked to the highest-tier plan

#4

![Speechelo](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=speechelo.com&sz=64)

### Speechelo

Best for: Hobbyists who want a one-time payment and don't need top-tier voice quality

6.0

Our rating / 10

Starts at $47/lifetimePricing checked September 25, 2026 on [Speechelo's own page](https://speechelo.com/)

Speechelo's lifetime pricing is appealing on paper, but it has no voice cloning and a much thinner feature set than ElevenLabs or OpenAI, with no published API. We don't recommend it for professional use in 2026.

Pros

- One-time payment instead of monthly subscription
- Decent variety of voices for the price point

Cons

- No voice cloning at any tier
- The lifetime pricing model has been quietly disappearing across competitors; verify the offer is still active before purchase
